RECYFIX® HICAP® slot drainage channels were used at the recently opened Sainsbury’s Superstore at Sedgefield, County Durham. Part of a £16.1 million investment by Terrace Hill plc property development group, the new 4549m² (48,922ft²) site opened to customers in early May 2013. The long opening hours, 6am until 11pm, mean the 322 space car park is in continuous use so an effective and durable surface drainage scheme was a major consideration.
Injection moulded from tough recycled polyethylene-polypropylene (PE-PP), over 240 metres of RECYFIX® HICAP® 100, 200 and 300 channels were delivered to site with their ductile iron slotted tops fitted. The heaviest one metre unit only weighed 23.5kg, yet when installed they met the F900 (90kN) loading required and provided a durable solution for both car park and service yard. Coated in black the ductile iron blends in well with the asphalt surface to give a neat, unobtrusive appearance.
Following demolition of old offices and warehouse buildings on the Salters Lane site, Barr Construction carried out highway works to form a new entrance before starting work on the retail shell and associated petrol filling station. With around 150 workers on site at the height of activity, Barr carried out an eight week fit-out of the store before handing over to Sainsbury’s. The new groceries store includes a customer cafe, TU clothing, electrical goods and DVDs sales areas.
Paul Spike, the project manager for KLM Groundworks, said:
We liked the RECYFIX® HICAP® surface water drainage system for its ease of handling, no mechanical lifting gear was needed when positioning the units into the foundation, thus providing a speedier installation procedure
